Signed with Love

Part of a series of films for Samsung x CNN, telling stories of inclusivity and accessibility.

The story follows David Cowan, an ASL interpreter who went viral after interpreting for Beyoncé at the Atlanta Pride Parade — but whose influence runs much deeper than that moment. Born deaf, David learned ASL in college and felt a world open up to him. He's spent the 30 years since making sure others have access to that same world, working across courthouses, festivals, schools, hospitals, and concert stages.

His goal is consistent no matter the setting: to give deaf people equal access to the same information and experiences as hearing people. I love people who simply do the important work, attention or otherwise — and David is one of them. I'm grateful to have met him, and to a wonderful crew in Atlanta who made this film possible across time zones and FaceTime calls. Truly a bright and selfless light.
